HILLARY CLINTON'S COMEBACK AND INCREDIBLE "SPINNING" MEN
The media runs its mouth 24/7 trying to convince me that it researches all things and knows all things. Of course, you can imagine my shock last Tuesday night (coffee in hand), when the sobbing Hillary Clinton pulled off a stunning upset over the I-get-the-feeling-he-was-becoming-a-little-cocky, Obama.
I was clearly in denial. I thought I knew better; but I had bought into the media’s invincibility - hook line and sinker. Never mind, the slim margin of victory (39% to 37%), the fact is that the Barak should have won, hands down in fact – by up to 10 points according to some of my know-it-all-you-just-have-to-listen-to-me friends.
So what really went wrong in New Hampshire? How could brilliant pollsters and “media men” be so wrong? Not with state-of-the-art techniques, entrance and exit polls and so much at stake. Could it be that people are blinded by the halo of Obama’s brilliance or, er…are so much against Hillary, the Clintons and the baggage that they were willing to “spin” in plain hindsight, the “Iowa surprise” and the so-called “surge” after the win?
Nah! The “herd effect” is real; but even with the over inflated egos of pollsters and “media men”, they are not fools (I think). That would be way too risky…but then again, politics, dislike for certain players and institutions, and scarce spoils are powerful motivators. I dare say, they may very well be bold enough to perpetrate the unthinkable in “spinning rooms” full of exploding maps and tickers going so fast, my brain cries for a defibrillator. The irony is that with overwhelming resources and technology, they can't tell me how 1,000 (maybe 2,000) voters from New Hampshire will vote.
At the end of the day, we all simply got it wrong – the numbers and indisputable results are there to prove it. I have accepted that and saved myself the pain of listening all day and night to some guy who flat out gave me the wrong horse, explain where he went wrong. Even more so, I am back to my old self. I now know that under no circumstance, will I be worse off for accepting advice from people with suspect methods and who rely on non-stop spin to carry through their hidden agenda. Back in school, we knew it as the “self-fulfilling prophecy”.
Now, they want to convince me of Hillary’s amazing comeback , not only for winning New Hampshire after being left for dead in Iowa, but also in climbing back from a ten (10) point deficit for a breath-taking victory at the line. Please…I have picked more winners blindfolded!!
Oh, by the way, congrats to Hillary for a memorable victory in New Hampshire and so too, to Barak for pulling off the unthinkable Iowa surprise. There are 40-plus states to go. Let’s hope that my incredible spinning friends will do less spinning, and allow the voters to make up their minds.
