MORE FODDER FOR DOTMOBI
The backers of DotMobi - an impressive list of the "who's who" in the mobile world, DotMobi fans and speculators alike are dreaming about the "Second Coming"...the second coming of DotCom. If they achieve half of what the more illustrious PC-based extension has done, it will indeed be a glorious and triumphant return.So far, there has been good good reasons to cheer...very good reasons to be optimistic about the possibilities:
(1) To start with, the extension - DotMobi - that is, had a very successful rollout or launch, with over 250,000 domains being registered since;
(2) The strategic plans and the overall methodology of dotMobi, the company behind the extension, have been well received and largely praised and accepted by th Domaining community who have become very important "first movers" in the Domaining World;
(3) The company's decsion to withold over 5000 premium domains (generics and phrases) choosing instead to release them gradually through a bidding process based on submitted structured development plans (the "RFP Process"), is seen as a tremendous plus, important for the development and awareness of the brand and ultimately to its success in the medium to long term;
(4) There have also been a few high profile DotMobi Sales such as Flowers.mobi, for $200,000 and Fun.Mobi $100,000. See DNJournal YTD Sales CHART.
(5) Well known Domainers such as Jeremy Padawer and Rick Schwartz, the "DotCom King" himself have shown strong support for the brand;
(6) Slowly but surely, resource tools (plenty of them) are been made available across the net to aid, improve user interface and fasttrack the development of DotMobi and the new mobile thrust; and
(7) Finally, the outside world is catching on...being impressed by the much improved look, interface and functionality.
These are just a few of the positive things that have happened so far. I am sure everybody would be happy, but the mood is about to shift to ecstatic: The prospects for the brand, now through Yahoo's intervention, have gotten much brighter: The company has launched the Beta testing phase of Sponsored Search for Mobile Phones. DotMobi supporters, on top of everything so far, can't contain themselves.
This (Yahoo's announcement) is a very important step, in that, it is one of the aspects of the DotCom era that made DotCom so valuable and successful. Apart from just simply buying the domain and sitting and waiting for some buyer to come calling...Domain investors, through Sponsored Search or Pay Per Click could monetise their domain names.
For those not familiar with the concept of parking and monetising; it's simply a website site page with relevant links...ads...sponsored ads. When someone lands on the CellPhone.com page through various means, the owner of the Domain earns each time a link is clicked. Simple!
The ability to monetise is huge. It is not something to be scoffed at. In Masters of Their Domains published in December 2005 (Business 2.0), it was reported that the Domain CellPhones.com made $1,300 per day parked. Another Domain Candy.com was reported to be making $300 per day. So, this is a very important step...a gigantic step.
With Google and other players yet to show their hand and assuming they will be rational and back up their investment in the extension, the future of Dotmobi is blinding. Prepare yourself world, the dream of the CEO of dotMobi Neil Edwards seems likely to be a pleasant realty: He will one day awaken to the news...the good news of DotMobi being the new DotCom - the mobile DotCom to be exact!
